It's for lots of people

In my blog this week I'm sharing this website that talks a little more about recreational therapy. There is one line in it that I love "Patients who undergo therapeutic recreation include those who experience physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges as a result of disease or injury." One big thing I have learned this semester is how diverse therapeutic recreation actually is. It isn't just working with people with physical disabilities. It includes those who are struggling mentally and emotionally as well.

This week I'm sharing a video posted by a classmate explaining what a Recreational Therapist does.

Yoga can be for EVERYBODY

I took a yoga class my freshman year of college. I loved it. One reason I loved it so much was because we were only expected to do what we physically felt we could do. The teacher was very kind and understanding of everyone's different skill level. It wasn't until this week that I learned that yoga in very inclusive and easily adaptable. Literally, anybody can do yoga.

Here are some videos.

This week I liked what a classmate shared about the benefits of sports. It is so important that sports are accessible to anybody who wants to participate.

Find the humor

This week I added some videos of one of my heroes. Her name is Kris Belcher. About 12 years ago she completely lost her vision. She is such an example of overcoming adversity to me. Not only has she overcome the challenge of becoming blind midway through her life, but she has been able to find humor in the situation.

The Seven Pillars of Inclusion

I found this video that talks about the seven pillars of inclusion. I loved it because it gave more clarity to me on what inclusion is exactly.

This week I'm including the blog from my classmate, Mikayla, in which she posted a lot of outdoor recreation facilities in Arizona.

Play!

I feel like as we get older we get caught up with our stressful life that we forget to have fun. We forget to play. I feel like playing is such an important part of a healthy life. This TED talk talks about the importance of playing.

From my classmates, I really like what one of them said about equine therapy in her blog post. http://recreatinsocks.blogspot.com/

Wheelchair Hockey

Here is a link to a video of a power wheelchair hokey team. There were some things I really liked from this video:
1) The game was well adapted to those who were playing.
2) There was inclusion.
3) The coaches celebrated with the team and made them feel special.

From a classmate's toolbox I really liked the point brought up by Brittney Crisp. We are talking a lot about how to accommodate those with disabilities that are out of their control, but we also need to be sure we are taking care of ourselves and preventing things that can be prevented.
